Aircraft Rental

Price List As of October 2023

All our aircraft are shown with a “Wet” rate which includes the cost of fuel and oil. If you take a longer trip and purchase fuel, we credit that amount toward your rental cost. Check before your trip for the maximum fuel reimbursement rate.

Rates are discounted for Active/Retired Military - thank you for your service!

A certificated pilot may rent our aircraft with a checkout flight. For the 172, a typical flight will consist of familiarization with the avionics, demonstration of a sampling of maneuvers, simulated emergency and at least 2 landings. Checkout flight is customized to your experience and needs – IFR or VFR and your proficiency level. Typical checkout for VFR is around an hour.

The Piper PA-32R Lance may be rented after a checkout flight to pilots with the following qualifications.

  • 250 hours total flying time.

  • 25 hours flying time in complex aircraft

  • Instrument rating

  • 2 hours time in PA-32R (including checkout flight)

Texas state sales tax of 8.25% is waived during training toward a rating. There is a 1% airport tax on all sales.

At Black Hound Aviation, we boast an impressive fleet of aircraft for use in our flight training programs as well as for rental. Rent an aircraft to take out for a spin (well, not an actual spin!), maintain proficiency in our TD2 flight simulator or learn more about our planes for flight training.

Cessna 172S - N810SA "NIOSA"
Cessna 172 N810SA
N810SA_Panel

This is a 2003 fuel injected 180HP Cessna. We use Cessna 172 aircraft for primary (Private Pilot), instrument and commercial/CFI training. This model is the world standard for flight training in part because they have one of the best safety records of any single engine aircraft anywhere. Roomy and comfortable, the high wing and ability to open windows in flight keep you cooler in the long Texas summer. N810SA has a KAP-140 2 axis autopilot with GPS roll steering, and has been upgraded with an Aspen Evolution Primary Flight Display (PFD) and an Avidyne IFD 440 GPS. GTX345 ADS-B In/Out provides inflight traffic and weather on the instrument panel as well as your tablet or phone via Bluetooth for enhanced flight safety. Thus, by the FAA's definition it qualifies as a Technologically Advanced Aircraft (TAA). Ten hours in TAA or complex aircraft help qualify pilots for their commercial rating.

This is a 1998 fuel injected Cessna 172R model that has been upgraded to a 180HP engine.  It is also our glass cockpit Skyhawk featuring Dynon's Skyview HDX glass panels and an Avydyne IFD 550 GPS navigator.  N9560S has a Dynon 2 axis autopilot with GPS roll steering and features ADS-B In/Out which provides inflight traffic and weather easily viewed on the large glass panel displays.  It is also equipped with an ElectroAir electronic ignition system with push button starter.  The electronic ignition results in faster climb and cruise speeds while optimizing fuel consumption.  Like NIOSA, it meets the FAA's definition as a Technologically Advanced Aircraft (TAA). Ten hours in TAA or complex aircraft help qualify pilots for their commercial rating.

Cessna 172 N172JD
N172JD_Panel

This meticulously maintained 1975 M model is a testament to the ageless beauty and durability of the Cessna Skyhawks. N172JD has been upgraded with an Aspen Evolution glass PFD, a Garmin 650W GPS with touch-screen display, a 180 horsepower engine and a Horton short takeoff and landing (STOL) modification (notice the wingtips). The STOL modification provides slower landing speeds and shorter takeoff and landing distances. Modifications to this aircraft have resulted in a gross takeoff weight of 2,550 lb. With useful load of more than 1000 pounds, it can easily carry FOUR 180 lb persons with a full load of fuel. GTX345 ADS-B In/Out, in-flight weather and Bluetooth connectivity are also provided. Redbird TD2 Basic Aviation Training Device (TD2 -BATD)
Redbird Simulator
Redbird Simulator

The TD2-BATD is an integral part of both our private and instrument training curriculum. Additionally, new regulations allow the TD2-BATD to be used without an instructor so instrument rated pilots can maintain their IFR currency, or with an instructor to practice realistic instrument failures far more effectively than in the plane. Specific FAA authorized uses for the TD-2 are available here.

With a short 30-45 minute checkout, you can easily be on your way to flying solo instrument approaches that are just as legal as those in the airplane, at a fraction of the cost. With your choice of a Garmin G1000 or a conventional '6-pack' panel, the TD2-BATD is an ideal means to finally get that G1000 transition training knocked out, save time and money on your instrument rating, or just update your currency/proficiency.

We have recently added a new option called Guided Independent Flight Training (GIFT). Redbird GIFT is a simulator-based, AI-powered, maneuvers training supplement designed to help you achieve your goals faster and for less money. Redbird GIFT allows you to learn, practice, and get feedback on every maneuver required for your Private Pilot or Instrument Rating, at your own pace, using cutting edge educational techniques that push you to reach your best performance level. Less time in the plane, more savings, faster progress!
